Oracle HFM Is Moving from VBScript to BSL: What Finance Teams Need to Know

If your team runs Hyperion Financial Management, you may have heard that Microsoft is retiring VBScript, the scripting language HFM has relied on for custom rules and logic since the beginning.

The good news is that Oracle saw this coming. HFM now includes a new, built-in scripting option called BSL, short for Business Script Language, and Oracle has also extended Premier Support for HFM through at least 2036. This is not HFM being phased out. It is HFM being kept current, and finance teams have a real say in how and when they make the switch.

What Is BSL in Oracle HFM?

Business Script Language, also called the Native Script Engine, is Oracle's own scripting engine built directly into HFM. It uses the same VBScript style syntax your rules and member lists already use, and it supports most of the built-in functions your team relies on today. Because it lives inside HFM itself rather than depending on a Windows component, it removes the platform's dependence on a piece of Microsoft technology that is going away. Best of all, the switch happens application by application, so you can move at a pace that works for your organization rather than flipping one giant switch. Oracle provides a more detailed Business Script Language (BSL) overview in its HFM documentation.

The timeline just got friendlier.

Oracle originally planned to make BSL the default in October 2026 and retire the Microsoft engine entirely by October 2027. After testing turned up a handful of issues, memory usage on certain rules, a few rule load errors, and some error handling differences, Oracle pushed both dates out. As of the latest EPM release, 11.2.26 from July 2026, BSL is now scheduled to become the default in October 2027, with the Microsoft engine sticking around for critical fixes until October 2029. That is real breathing room to plan a smooth transition instead of a rushed one.

These dates align with Oracle's current published Microsoft Engine removal timeline.

One thing worth watching.

BSL is designed to feel familiar, and most rules make the move without any trouble. The one habit worth building early is testing for matching results, not just successful loads. A rule can load perfectly fine under BSL and still calculate a number differently than it did under VBScript, without throwing any error to flag it. That is easy to catch with a side by side test and easy to miss without one, so it is worth building into however your team plans this migration.

A Simple Way to Get Started

You do not need to touch production to get moving. Duplicate an application into a test environment, switch that copy to the Native Script Engine, and run your normal close and consolidation processes against it. Compare the results to your VBScript baseline, fix anything that needs adjusting, and repeat with your next application whenever you are ready.

Starting with a lower-risk application is a great way to build confidence before moving anything that matters most.

This approach also follows Oracle's recommended process. Oracle advises duplicating an application in a test environment before switching it to the Native Script Engine and addressing any script errors before proceeding. For the technical steps, see Oracle's documentation for switching from the Microsoft VBScript Engine to the Native Script Engine.

Start Planning Your HFM Transition with Confidence

There is time before BSL becomes the default, but that does not mean you have to wait to start preparing. Testing your applications now can help uncover differences, establish a reliable baseline, and give your team a clearer path forward before the transition becomes more urgent.

iArch Solutions helps organizations manage and modernize complex Oracle EPM environments. Whether you need help evaluating your current HFM environment, building a BSL testing plan, validating results, or preparing for your next EPM upgrade, our team can help you determine the right next step for your organization.
