EPM Jazzing

One of the fun parts of installing EPM 11.2.x is the RCU.  For those not familiar, that is short for Repository Creation Utility, and it is a component used by WebLogic to store security and other Fusion related information in a database or schema.  It is setup during configuration, and little used after that, except for startup operations and redeployments.

A frequent issue that happens is failures to deploy applications during the initial configuration.  When this occurs, it’s usually because some value in the RCUSchema.properties file (which you need to setup prior to configuration) is off.  This file is used during the first deployment to build out the WebLogic domain, and if this is not built out properly, then things tend to fail.

In the past, I would always check the logs in:

/user_projects/epmsystem1/diagnostics/logs/config/configtool.log

and see that the file, /user_projects/domains/EPMSystem/config/system-jazn-data.xml was missing.

The above error was my cue to delete the /domains folder, usually fix my RCUSchema.properties file, and redeploy things.

However, I’ve lately encountered this issue when everything is correct in that file, and the EPM software simply refuses to deploy.  So while digging around looking for a way to solve this, I found out that there are multiple copies of this file sitting under /Middleware/Oracle_Common.  I tried not deleting my domain that failed deployment, and simply coping one of these files into the above folder, and then redeploying as usual via the configuration utility.  This worked and everything then deployed successfully.

I am still unsure why the initial deployment sometimes fails, and in particular fails to copy this file where it is needed, but it is definitely a quicker fix, and may save some of you time when that pesky initial deployment fails.
